SportsDirect announced today major Canadian publisher Transcontinental Media selected the company to provide dynamic sports content for its daily newspapers’ online offerings. Transcontinental is the first Canadian business to sign with SportsDirect. It is the largest printer in Canada and the seventh largest in North America. As one of Canada’s leading publishers the company reaches 11 million readers with its consumer magazines and dozens of daily and community newspapers, such as Métro (Montreal), The Daily News (Halifax), and The Telegram (St. John’s, Newfoundland).

Transcontinental daily newspapers will receive a full sports content solution from SportsDirect that includes live in-progress scores, statistics and special features for all the major sports. It joins over a dozen U.S. companies offering current sports information produced by SportsDirect. Those partnerships have brought the information licensed by SportsDirect to millions of readers across North America.

“Landing a major Canadian media provider like Transcontinental is very important to us,” said Paul Lavers, CEO of SportsDirect. “Having our products recognized at home really validates our strategy. Transcontinental readers want the very best in sports subject matter and we’re pleased to be able to provide them that.”

“We are pleased to be bringing sports content of this high quality to our readers and especially pleased to do it in partnership with a local Canadian company,” said Kevin McIntosh, Director of Digital Publishing for Transcontinental Newspapers. “As a leader in our industry we always aim to work with partners who are leaders in theirs. Sports Direct fits that bill.”

Started in 1995, content deals with USAToday.com and MSNBC helped put SportsDirect on the map and pave the way to more partnerships. Since then, the company has developed sports content feeds tailored for online, interactive and new media providers. SportsDirect’s association with Transcontinental is part of a recent initiative to grow SportsDirect’s content services offering.
